THE SHADOW OF THE CROSS

The crucifixion is the clearest picture of both God’s holiness and His unfathomable love for a broken world.

Today, we turn our attention to Golgotha—the place where the most significant event in human history unfolded. The crucifixion is not merely a story of execution; it is the clearest picture of both God’s holiness and His unfathomable love for a broken world.

THE WEIGHT OF SACRIFICE

As Jesus hung on the cross, He fulfilled the prophecy of the Suffering Servant:

“But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed.” — Isaiah 53:5

Christ did not resist. He did not call down angels. He chose the cross because He chose us. In that moment, He stood in our place, absorbing the justice our sin deserved so that we could receive the grace we could never earn.

THE CRY AND THE COMPLETION

In the darkness of that day, Jesus cried out:

“My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” — Matthew 27:46

For a moment, He experienced the full weight of separation caused by sin. But the story did not end in silence. It ended in victory.

“It is finished.” — John 19:30

With those words, the debt of sin was paid in full. The temple veil was torn from top to bottom (Mark 15:38), declaring that the barrier between God and man had been removed. Access to God was no longer limited. Through Christ, it was opened completely.

OUR RESPONSE TO THE CROSS

The cross is not just something to observe, it is something that calls for a response. One of the thieves beside Jesus recognized this and said:

“Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” — Luke 23:42

In his final moments, he acknowledged his need for a Savior and found mercy.

The cross reminds us that no one is too far gone. Grace is still available. Forgiveness is still offered.

CONCLUSION

What was meant to be a symbol of shame became the ultimate symbol of hope. The cross reveals two truths at the same time: we are more sinful than we realized, yet more loved than we ever imagined.

“I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me.” — Galatians 2:20

Because of the cross, our old life is gone, and a new life begins in Him.
