THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT

The Holy Spirit is our divine companion—poured out to empower the church and to manifest the character of God in the world.

The Holy Spirit is our divine companion—poured out to empower the church and to manifest the character of God in the world. He is not a force or a feeling, but the very presence of God at work within us, shaping who we are and how we live.

THE POWER OF THE SPIRIT

Before Jesus ascended, He made a promise that would change everything for His followers:

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth." — Acts 1:8

This moment marked the beginning of a life transformed by His presence. The power Jesus promised was not for personal glory or spiritual performance—it was for witness, for mission, for carrying the Gospel forward.

GIFTS FOR THE COMMON GOOD

The Spirit distributes gifts throughout the body of Christ, and every gift has a purpose beyond the individual who carries it.

"Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good." — 1 Corinthians 12:7

These gifts—ranging from wisdom and faith to healing and prophecy—are given as the Spirit determines, weaving individual believers into a unified body.

"All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines." — 1 Corinthians 12:11

No gift is random. No believer is overlooked. The Spirit places each piece exactly where it needs to be so the body functions as one.

LOVE ABOVE ALL

While these manifestations are diverse, they are governed by the greatest of all virtues: love. Without it, even the most powerful gift becomes empty.

"If I speak in the tongues of men or of angels, but do not have love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but do not have love, I am nothing." — 1 Corinthians 13:1-3

Gifts without love are noise. Power without love is performance. The Spirit does not just give us ability—He produces within us the very love of God that makes those abilities mean something.

CONCLUSION

We are called to earnestly desire the gifts of the Spirit, but above all, to pursue the transformative love that makes them effective instruments of God's grace in a broken world.

The Spirit does not fill us so we can be impressive. He fills us so we can be useful. He empowers us not for display, but for the service of others.

Desire the gifts. Walk in the Spirit. But love—always love—above all.
